Hotel rating: Farmhouse Resort Smiling Gecko, Cambodia We had the pleasure of spending a few days at Farmhouse Resort Smiling Gecko in Cambodia, and our stay was all around impressive. The complex is simply fantastic – extensive gardens, well-kept paths and an idyllic atmosphere that promises peace and relaxation. The food was an absolute highlight. The culinary delights served here are not only excellent in taste, but also fresh and regional. The quality and variety of the food have inspired us every day. The bungalows are very nice and designed with great attention to detail. However, they are a bit oversized, which can seem luxurious, but sometimes a bit over the top. We would like to emphasize the friendliness and service quality in the restaurant. The staff was always courteous, warm and professional. At the reception, however, the service could be improved even more, as we would have expected a little more warmth and efficiency here. A big plus was the encounter with the general manager and his assistant. Both took a lot of time to introduce us to the entire Smiling Gecko project. It was inspiring to see how much passion and dedication is being worked here. Staying at Farmhouse Resort is very expensive overall. However, the proceeds go to the project and the school, which makes this price a very good investment. Not only does it support your own comfort, but it also makes a valuable contribution to community and local education. We are deeply impressed by what has emerged here in just ten years and take our hats off to all those who have contributed to it – especially founders Hannes Schmid and Sokleap Ngon. Their commitment and vision have created something truly special that goes far beyond a simple resort. Conclusion: A unique experience that perfectly combines luxury and social commitment. We highly recommend a stay at Farmhouse Resort Smiling Gecko.

Wonderful place and amazing project
It was so great to do the farm tour and to discover this unique projet supporting the surrounding local communities. Very impressive! The staff in this resort is extremely kind and professional, we always felt very well. The pools are wonderful. The food is the best we can find in Southeast Asia. The cooking class and the fine dining will remain one of the best experiences we’ve hard during our 3 weeks journey in Cambodia! A big thank you again to the engaging and warm Chef, Mariya, as well as to her caring team!

Impressive!
The concept and implementation of Smiling Gecko are outstanding. It is clear that it takes time before it can finance itself (from its own income). Hannes Schmidt and his team make this very impressive. Hopefully Hannes can continue this for another 10-20 years:

A project to give work and study to hundreds of people that produces everything that is served for dinner and breakfast, accommodation all Bungalows in perfect harmony with nature, exquisite dinner and breakfast, very nice pool, everything perfect including ride with local person to see all their production of all kinds!!

Staying at The Farmhouse, and experience the amazing NGO work and initiatives by Smiling Gecko was a true eye opener. The many initiatives are creating the circumstances for a better future, for generations in Cambodia, something I recommend all to experience, and support, first hand. The Farmhouse makes for a perfect work conference environment, with excellent facilities, food, activities, and relax. Well done Hannes, Daniel and Team. And Chef Mariya.

Tranquil. Verdant, Perfect.
While I was here for business, I want to return for again for a holiday and to unwind. The Farmhouse is the perfect location to re-set from the pace of city life; I was struck by the green surroundings, and the peace & quiet. My accommodation in a traditional Khmer house was wonderful - I wish I had more time to enjoy it all the more! The staff members were friendly, the food delicious, and libations at the poolside bar were fantastic, many with a local twist. I appreciate that the Farmhouse supports the local community, and that money spent goes into it, rather than a faceless corporation. I highly recommend The Farmhouse … an easy 2 hours (maybe a bit less depending on traffic) out of Phnom Penh, it’s absolutely worth a visit. Stay as long as you can!

we truly enjoyed our stay at the farmhouse. service was excellent. rooms great. the fact that proceeds also go to the smiling gecko project, supporting the local community, was very important to us. full marks to the team and management. don t miss the farm and school tour
